Restoration is a replacement process of many components in the piano. Therefore, restoration requires a professional deployment of experience and knowledge that operate along with great structural knowledge of the piano itself.
In most old pianos, the cast iron frame and some parts of the action may still be in good condition. Therefore, rebuilding a piano requires more intensive work than restoration. However, there is no precise definition between the two terms. Pianos are made of hardwoods and heavy metal (such as iron), and are designed and engineered to stand the test of time.
In essence, pianos are "generational" in nature, meaning they can be passed down from one generation to the next, with the correct skilled knowledge, labor, and preservation techniques that are always involved in their care and restoration.
